TypeCon Program: Type for the Seoul

TypeCon Identity: Type for the Seoul

TypeCon is an annual conference presented by the non-profit Society of Typographic Aficionados (SOTA), an international organization dedicated to the promotion, study, and support of typography and related arts. For this project I was tasked with creating a fictitious concept for TypeCon 2020 and then developing a type identity that which I would implement via a print program, lanyard, and collateral piece that would be distributed at the program.

The concept for this conference was centered around this idea of bringing together people across borders and cultures to share knowledge, expertise, and research within the practices of typography related to cross-cultural environments. For this reason, I chose an international location to hold TypeCon 2020 and that happened to be Seoul, South Korea. The keywords I chose to revolve my type identity and color palette around were: subtle, balance, culture, and elegance. Because this conference was to be located in Korea, I wanted this program to be reflective of the culture and what made that possible for me was the addition of Hangul, the written Korean language. I chose to sprinkle in some Korean type with the latin type to communicate this idea of diversity and harmony between cultures and understanding.

Lanyard

For the lanyard, I tried my best to translate my type identity and visual layout to a smaller canvas without losing the essence of the theme. I chose to utilize elements from the mark along with the colors and type to create a name tag that felt unique to the program.

Collateral

As for my collateral piece, I chose to go with a pen. I thought a pen could be practical as many of the attendees would be going between workshops, talks, and events and they may want to jot things down on paper throughout their day. I thought this collateral would be the perfect buddy to have throughout the day and something that would be useful even after the conference was over. This would be a great way to kind of extend that experience of TypeCon and allow people to bring a small part of their experience back home with them.
